Has BLA prepared me for College? [Sep. 12th, 2005|06:00 pm]

Maybe if BLA had a stronger science program and better guidance counselors...

College is not easier than highschool. Seriously, taking 2 science classes and intermediate German has left me with virtually no social life.

For some reason BLA has failed to give me proper education. I lack the English skills that most of my classmates had. BLA's science program was a joke! >=(

I thought the art classes would be easy here... peeehh think again!

for you to blame your english troubles on bla is like me blaming my math troubles on bla. also is english even your mother language?

but that is true about their science program tho.

i feel that bla gets you in the right mindset for college, if nothing else. at least it tries. that school seems like it dumbs itself down more and more every year. soon even its reputation won't save it.

i mean i went to summer school twice and i felt like the biggest goody-two-shoes there. that's why i'm sitting in the suffolk computer lab now and not pushing a baby carriage down malcolm x boulevard. same goes for you.

also wait till you write your first paper...it'll feel so easy

keane was way more demanding than any of my college teachers so far, except jurich...and she was being unreasonable; like she was demanding but never really made it clear to us what she wanted. but everyone else doesn't hold a candle to keane. if anyone is reading this comment who is still at bla tell her adina says hi!!!!!!

i second the better guidance counselors notion.

but it's also a two way street. did you use BLA to your full advantage? its easy to look back and think about all that sucked about the school; personally, i know there were many times when i was just like "fuck this", and would slack on a lot of things. but for all the times i think about what bla hasn't prepared me for i think of all the times i failed to prepare myself. not saying you failed to prepare yourself or anything, but, just a comment.

I know what your talking about, however I feel like I did make the best I could of my experience there, but it wasn't enough for what I'm facing now.

Maybe when it comes down it the only thing that can prepare you for college is college.

whats your major?

For the most part, the science program at BLA did pretty much suck. I can only think of two really good science teachers.

Some classes at BLA were harder than some of the classes I've taken thus far in college...some were easier. It all comes down to the college you're at, the professors you have, the teachers you had at BLA, and what you took away from your classes. I think when you get to more english courses and what not you'll find that you're head and shoulders above the rest of the class. I know thats how it is with me at suffolk. There are just some things that you don't even realize you have within your personality that was built in by your time at BLA that others around you just completely lack.

BLA Does need more AP's, better science teachers, more computer science classes, more options for languages (I wish we had had mandarin chinese like BLS has), and more funding so that said needs are a real possibility. The fact is that our "prep" is basically just in english and the "classics".

I dunno. lol basically just rambling.

also are you gonna be in worcester columbus day weekend? I'll be in sturbridge all weekend and thats supposedly right near there. me you and james (if hes in worcester then) should all chill.

I'm doing Biochemistry on the pre-med track with a minor in German.

I don't know if I'll be in Worcester that weekend. But if I am we can chill.

"doing less work than in high school" = college professors are way better than high school teachers

I agree that college professors are so much better than HS teachers....there are only a few good HS teachers out there as it is

I find it unwise to shelf ambitions in the face of adversity. People frequently make the mistake of taking another's account of something at face value. Until you actually have the experience yourself, you cannot anticipate how events will transpire. You have the mental toughness necessary to succeed, I know it. Anyway, I'm not out often, so hit me up and we can chat about something, anything you want. I may be only a small piece of your social life, but every litttle bit helps, right?

Ugh, You guys missed what I'm saying.

I'm not flunking out or anything. I'm actually getting A's. I'm just saying I'm working my ass off here and my schedual is intense (I have 2, 4-5 hour labs a week, an hour discussion group for German, on top of the 4 classes) and that there is no way BLA could have prepared me for that.

Re: Ugh, You guys missed what I'm saying.

oh...well yeah. They don't really tell you what college is really like much. I think its because they mostly can't....colleges are really different depending upon the one you go to. like, at suffolk its the complete opposite for me. I haven't worked my ass off since senior year at BLA and I made the deans list.

Of course, I'm a social science major and I think that the workload for a regular science major would be a whole lot harder because science is like that. don't worry...you'll get into a groove with your studies and all will be well once again. working your ass off is a pain now, but later on it'll be worth it. You'll certainly be making more than I will in 10 years.

Re: Ugh, You guys missed what I'm saying.

10 years? no, hahah. I'll be doing residency in a hospital, that is assuming I stay pre-med, make it into med school, and make it out.
